You have months or years of ChatGPT conversations — project notes, code solutions, brainstorming sessions, templates. If you delete your account, switch to Claude, or OpenAI changes their data policies, those conversations disappear. Here's how to export everything, where to store it, and how to make it searchable after export.
- Official export: Settings → Data Controls → Export Data (arrives within hours)
- Format: ZIP file containing JSON conversation history
- What's included: All conversations, custom instructions, account data
- What's NOT included: Images generated by DALL-E (only prompts are saved)
- Processing time: Minutes to hours depending on history size
- Last verified: April 2026
Step 1: Export from ChatGPT
Go to Settings → Data Controls → Export Data → Confirm Export. OpenAI emails you a download link within minutes to hours. The ZIP file contains a conversations.json file with every conversation you've ever had, your custom instructions, and account metadata.
Download it immediately — the link expires. Store the ZIP in cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox) and a local backup.
Step 2: Make It Readable
The raw JSON file isn't meant for humans. Each conversation is a nested object with timestamps, model versions, and message arrays. To make it useful, you have a few options.
Copy the JSON into Claude and ask: "Parse this ChatGPT export file. List all conversations by date with a one-line summary of each topic." Claude's 1M context window handles even massive export files.
For ongoing access, import into Obsidian. Several community scripts convert ChatGPT JSON exports into individual markdown files organized by date. Each conversation becomes a searchable note in your vault.
Step 3: Set Up Ongoing Backups
Don't wait for an annual export. Set a monthly reminder to export your ChatGPT data. If you use multiple AI platforms, this becomes even more important — your intellectual work is scattered across services you don't control.

Why This Matters Now
The QuitGPT movement pushed millions of users to consider leaving ChatGPT. OpenAI's introduction of ads created new data policy concerns. And any service can change its terms, restrict access, or shut down features without notice.
Your conversations contain your thinking process, your solutions, your templates, and your workflow knowledge. Treating them as disposable is the same as never saving a document you wrote — eventually you'll wish you had.
For managing prompts and conversations across multiple AI platforms, TresPrompt organizes ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini conversations from a single Chrome extension with folders, search, and prompt management.
If You're Migrating to Claude
Export your ChatGPT data first. Then review your most-used custom instructions and conversation patterns. Recreate your key workflows in Claude Projects — upload reference documents, set custom instructions, and you'll have a persistent context that's actually more powerful than what ChatGPT offered.
