Cursor Pro is $20/month, which sounds comparable to Claude Pro. The difference is usage-based pricing on top of the subscription. When you use Agent mode with premium models (Claude Opus, GPT-5), each agent step makes a separate API call. A complex task might generate 15-30 API calls in a single interaction.
On a routine project, this adds $30-100/month. On a complex project with heavy Agent mode usage, it can reach hundreds or thousands. The $5,500 case was an outlier, but $200-500/month for active development is common among power users.
The pricing is opaque — you don't see per-call costs in real time. You see the total at the end of the billing cycle and realize your "free trial" of a premium model cost more than your rent.
How Claude Code Costs Work
Claude Code is a command-line tool that uses your Claude subscription. Every interaction counts against your Claude Pro or Max rate limits — the same limits that govern the web interface. There's no additional per-call billing.
The tradeoff: Claude Pro limits can run out in 2-3 hours of heavy Claude Code usage. At that point you either wait for the 5-hour rolling reset or upgrade to Max ($100/month) for 5x the limits.

Choose Claude Code ($20-100/month predictable) when: You're comfortable with terminal workflows. You want predictable billing. You need MCP integrations (Figma, GitHub, Google Drive). You're doing large refactors or autonomous multi-file tasks.
Choose both when: You use Cursor for day-to-day visual editing (standard chat mode, not Agent) and Claude Code for complex autonomous tasks. Keep Cursor on its base plan and avoid Agent mode with premium models.

Claude Pro ($20/month) as your primary coding tool through Claude Code. Cursor free tier or Pro ($20/month) for visual editing without Agent mode. Total: $20-40/month with no surprise bills.
